The collection contains the personal and legal papers of Archibald Stuart (1757-1826) of Staunton, Va., while an attorney and member of the Virginia House of Delegates, including correspondence, 1785-1831, some concerning the Missouri Compromise, pension claims, presidential electors, and John Quincy Adams; draft of the proposed 1785 Virginia constitution drawn by Thomas Jefferson; resolution concerning the Treaty of Paris; petition, ca. 1794, to the General Assembly for a constitutional convention; bonds, 1787-1816; agreements, 1787-1817, concerning land in Augusta County, Va., and slaves; appointment as deputy attorney; inventory of his estate; and legal documents, 1797-1811, concerning his executorship of the estate of Hugh Donaghe. Also, includes the papers of Alexander Hugh Holmes Stuart (1807- 1891), including those relating to his law practice in Staunton and correspondence, 1836-1881, some concerning secession, The Industrial South (periodical), mineral resources in Virginia, and a monument to Henry Clay. In addition, there are miscellaneous family letters, 1782-1836.
